However, Siena’s narrative took a dramatic turn in the mid-14th century with the devastating Black Death of 1348. The plague decimated nearly half of the population, leaving the city weakened and unable to sustain its former dominance.

Our exploration begins at the Basilica of San Domenico, a majestic church dedicated to St. Catherine of Siena, one of the city’s most revered figures and the patron saint of Italy. Inside, you’ll find relics of St. Catherine, including her preserved head and finger, offering a fascinating spiritual experience.
Wandering through Siena’s medieval streets is like stepping into a living history book. Each corner reveals stories and secrets from the past, and soon we find ourselves at Piazza Salimbeni, home to Monte dei Paschi di Siena, the world’s oldest surviving bank. This piazza reflects Siena’s historical role as a financial powerhouse in the Middle Ages.
Another significant landmark is Piazza del Campo, the heart of Siena and one of the world’s most beautiful squares. Its distinctive shell shape is encircled by stunning medieval buildings, bestowing a timeless charm upon the area. Overseeing the piazza is the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena’s historic town hall, and Torre del Mangia, a towering symbol of the city.
With its height matching that of Siena Cathedral, the tower represents the balance of power between church and state during that era. The tower’s name, Torre del Mangia, honours its first bell-ringer, Giovanni di Balduccio, nicknamed Mangiaguadagni for his indulgent spending habits.

The Piccolomini Library, a hidden gem within the cathedral, boasts colourful frescoes by Pinturicchio and his workshop, featuring works by a young Raphael.
